    «Перехватывая руками», быстро и легко. После XV в. большинство кораблей были оснащены несколькими верёвочными лестницами, которые вели к главным перекладинам (spars). Это позволяло команде судна забираться на снасти, чтобы поднимать или спускать паруса. Иногда ветры налетали внезапно, и, опасаясь крушения, капитан отдавал приказ экипажу подниматься на реи для свёртывания всех парусов. Моряки могли легко упасть с мачты, когда корабль бросало из стороны в сторону. Грубые верёвочные лестницы были слишком неудобными для быстрого спуска, поэтому большинство матросов хватали длинные верёвки и на руках спускались по ним вниз hand over hand (рука над рукой). Такой быстрый спуск стали называть hand over hand, и это выражение стало обозначать любой стремительный процесс. Возможно, под влиянием популярных кулачных боёв в конце XVIII в. это выражение было изменено на сочетание hand over fist (рука над кулаком). В настоящее время эта фраза используется в деловом мире, чтобы обозначить быстрый финансовый успех.
